Thomson, Rachel Interview with Wendy, 21, White British, working class. Women, Risk and AIDS Project, Manchester, 1989 including fieldnotes. Original version (Ref: BYC07) This interview is part of the Women, Risk and Aids Project (1989-90) archive which was created as part of the Reanimating Data Project (2018-20).

Transcript of an interview with a 21 year old young woman (Wendy) living in North Manchester. The interviewee is married and pregnant for the first time. She talks about three key sexual relationships. Her first long term relationship of about a year with the person that she lost her virginity too. Her previous two year relationship with a colleague, who was more interested in his friends then her. He had a relationship with someone else at the same time, who became pregnant which ended her relationship with him. Also discusses her current relationship and marriage. Interviewee went on the pill during her first relationship. She told her mum about this who supported her and with who she has an open and trusting relationship. She remained on the pill until she was married which is the reason she thinks she didn’t get pregnant at a young age, unlike most of her school friends and peers. One month into being married she decided she wanted to have a baby and got pregnant straight away. Discussion about HIV and AIDS. Learnt about HIV/AIDS from the television but has limited knowledge. Doesn’t know anyone with HIV / AIDS and doesn’t think that she is at risk. Discussion of what ‘sleeping around’ means and how to protect yourself from HIV (using ‘durex’, reducing number of partners and avoiding having sex with a ‘lad’s lad’). Doesn’t think that men are interested in contraception or take responsibility for it.
