This is a digital reproduction of an image held within the Library of Congress.

The image depicts two women sitting on traditionally woven Palestinian rugs, smoking a waterpipe (known in Palestine as arghileh). Both women wear the traditional Bethlehem headdress otherwise known as the 'shatweh', which signifies that they are both married. The veil conceals rows of coins, beads and coral, to symbolise family wealth.

This image is part of the Bethlehem Women collection within the Library of Congress project of the Planet Bethlehem Archive.
