This is a digital reproduction of an image held in the Library of Congress.
The image depicts a group of stone-cutters carrying limestone in Jerusalem. The Jerusalem hills are well known for their variety of limestone deposits, a material that forms the basis of most of the region's buildings. Bethlehem has long been known as a centre of stone masonry. The town provided large numbers of the stone masons who built Jerusalem's newly expanding suburbs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This image exists as part of the Bethlehem Crafts collection in the Library of Congress project of the Planet Bethlehem Archive.
