Taken in 1934, the image exists as part of a series produced by John D. Whiting and G. Eric Matson. The image depicts a woman, child and younger woman sat at a window in their distinctive Bethlehem forms of dress. The cone-shaped headdress, otherwise known as the 'shatweh', also indicates that the subject to the far left is a married woman of Bethlehem. This traditional headdress is worn by married women in Bethlehem and is covered with rows of coins, beads and coral, to symbolise family wealth.The veiled woman to the far right is unmarried, as suggested by the lack of shatweh.
