Sartre's Theatre: Acts for Life
book
posted on 2023-06-08, 07:46 authored by Benedict O'DonohoePublished at the centenary of Sartre's birth, this volume offers a wide-ranging and comprehensive appraisal of Sartre's entire dramatic opus, from his inaugural "nativity" play, "Bariona" (1940) to his final and apocalyptic evocation of Armageddon, "Les Troyennes" (The Trojan Women, 1965). It draws on a close reading of Sartre's writings in philosophy, literature and criticism, and provides an extensive survey of journalistic and academic reception of his dramatic works. Each play is situated in relation both to Sartre's intellectual evolution and to the broader historical context. This is the first full-length study in English of the whole of Sartre's theatre, and it will be of interest to students of European drama as well as to those of French literature and ideas.
