Notes
This is a key anchor chapter in a volume also jointly edited by Prof Jasanoff, which underpins the seminal thrust of the book as a whole, of needing to transcend simplistic dichotomies between local and global. Taking the iconic image of the Earth from space, the chapter for the first time illuminates this as a reflection of contemporary US `wealth, pride and insecurity' and the distinctive culture of separating science from values. These critical themes have since been widely picked up in science and technology studies and political science alike.
