Notes
This is a key anchor chapter in a volume also jointly edited by Prof Jasanoff, which underpins the seminal thrust of the book as a whole, of needing to transcend simplistic dichotomies between local and global. Taking the iconic image of the Earth from space, the chapter for the first time illuminates this as a reflection of contemporary US `wealth, pride and insecurity' and the distinctive culture of separating science from values. These critical themes have since been widely picked up in science and technology studies and political science alike.Full text available
