Introduction to navigating entrepreneurial contexts: The theoretical and methodological richness of entrepreneurship research
The intricate interconnection between entrepreneurship and the context in
which it occurs remains a widely debated topic. Welter et al. (2019) trace the
evolution of the role of context in entrepreneurship studies. At the beginning,
studies on entrepreneurship deemed the context stable, narrow, and taken
for granted (Baker et al., 1997; Chandra, 2018). For these studies the refer-
ence point was Silicon Valley, and the “who,” “where,” “how,” and “why”
attributes of contextual factors were respectively “men,” “industrialized
countries,” “through technological innovations,” and “to generate profits and
wealth” (Welter et al., 2019). Such a view of the entrepreneurial activity was
detached from the context where it happened. The importance of context to
understand entrepreneurship rapidly gained attention (Gartner, 1995; Gartner,
2008; Zahra, 2007).
