Notes
This paper was originally presented to an interdisciplinary conference in Forlì, Italy. It argues that there are two models of `mixity¿ (mestizaje, meticciato, métissage etc). One is a vertical model which emerged from within a colonial context and referred to cultural and linguistic change through `contact¿ between sections of a `native¿ (i.e. indigenous) population who adopted and adapted elements of the dominant (colonial) language and culture. The other is a `horizontal¿ model which describes the kind of cultural change experienced in contemporary cities of Europe. Data from studies of young people in ethnic minority populations help us explore this difference.Full text available
