Ochlocracy and democracy in the 'Long quarrel': modern republicanism and its ancient rivals revisited
This paper originated in a keynote lecture delivered at the conference, The Long Quarrel: Ancients and Moderns in the Eighteenth Century, at the University of Amsterdam on 16th June 2016. It tracks the ochlocracy/democracy distinction in the political thought of long eighteenth century, and thereby casts light on the intellectual history of democracy.
