The essay examins Habermas's theory of the structural transformation of the public sphere and historians' use of it. It argues that Habermas's narrative is predicated on a history of the family, itself outdated and otherwise little applied. It calls for a reassessment of the boundaries between 'public' and 'private' and explorations of change in the logn run.
