Accountability is central to social work practice and to the organisational contexts in which it takes place. This chapter identifies ways of understanding accountability as a concept and explores contemporary concerns about its effectiveness. The legal framework is presented, with consideration of mechanisms it provides for holding social work to account, concluding with the implications of this analysis for future directions in accountability.
