‘Is this really where home is?’ Experiences of home in a revisited homeland among ageing Azorean returnees
chapter
posted on 2023-06-09, 03:19 authored by Dora SampaioThis chapter offers a critical analysis of the integration paths, experiences of home, and psychosocial wellbeing among ageing Azorean returnees, mostly from the US and Canada. The analysis is framed around four dimensions: physical/material, health, psychosocial and place attachment and belonging. The linkages between each one of these dimensions and the migrants’ psychosocial welfare are especially touched upon. The chapter stresses the importance of going beyond the objective and material side of integration back home to further explore the role of community and place in shaping subjective dimensions such as health and psychological and social wellbeing. It further delves into the challenges of drawing integration policies for older returnees.
