Music co-commissioned simultaneously with the Sophy Rickett film by Glyndebourne Opera and Photoworks. First live performance: 17 November 2007, Glyndebourne Opera House. Also installed as a four channel recording with Sophy Rickett's film at the De La Warr Pavilion from 29 September 2007 to 8 January 2008. Score publisher: University of York Music Press. The submission consists of a score of the work published by University of York Music Press (ISMN M 57020 993 4). The following are supplied in a file of supplementary materials intended to support Dr. Ed Hughes's submission: 1. DVD of the film with four channel audio recording of Ed Hughes's musical composition. 2. A paper on the process of collaboration, by Dr. Hughes, which was delivered at the University of London conference Sound, Music and the Moving Image on 10 September 2007. In its engagement with the film work, the musical work explores: 1. Cinematic use of non-diegetic sound (orchestra and voices) in an operatic context. 2. Use of pre-recorded sound to emulate 'off-stage' effects. 3. Collaboration - meeting points between visual and musical work inspired by the machinery of opera, and the sharing of concepts across disciplines.
