This international curatorial project, resulting in two exhibitions, focuses on the relation between mainstream cinema and artist film and video. The research explores how artists are experimenting with the structures and ideology of mainstream cinema (e.g. narrative, representation, stardom) and what styles and repercussions can be traced from this (e.g. appropriation, reenactment, reimagining). Drawing on narrative theory including Metz on film codes and Mayne on narrative meaning, the project included a survey of over 50 artists' work resulting in three curatorial themes and 15 films and videos curated and presented in the UK (Globe Gallery, Newcastle, 13 Feb-14 March 2009) and Australia (The Block, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, 13 June – 28 June 2008).
