The image is one of a series of drawings and paintings of Bethlehem by the renowned Scottish artist David Roberts. It depicts Bethlehem from the main approach road, later named "Star Street" from the northwest. In the distance, the Church of the Nativity complex can be seen, as can the archway, Qoos az-Zarara, marking the traditional entrance point into Bethlehem. Roberts visited Bethlehem as part of his tour of the Holy Land and Egypt in 1838-39.
