POOR QUALITY AUDIO. Nicola Saras (89 years old from Beit Jala) interviewed by Nisreen Khaliliya.

He discusses the following: World War I and the Ottoman period; people suffered from hunger and poverty; initially the Ottomans did not conscript Christians into the army but after a while they began to conscript Christians too whilst permitting those who could pay to buy themselves out of it; a man from Beit Jala who refused to pay to avoid conscription was killed by the Ottoman army.
