This is a digital reproduction of an image held in the Library of Congress.

This photograph shows the Grotto of the Nativity, the place where Jesus is said to have been born. The natural walls of the cave were covered with marble during the Byzantine period and the current structure has been modified over time, demonstrated by the decoration and the presence of the crib. The grotto is entered by a narrow and restricted staircase.

This image exists as part of the Nativity Church collection within the Library of Congress project of the Planet Bethlehem Archive.
