This refereed review article considered two monographs, one co-authored book and an edited volume and sought to evaluate what they said about the contemporary nature of Franco-German relations in the context of ever-deepening European integration. The article argued against the temptation to generalise about this relationship. A close examination reveals that its nature varies across policy areas and between `high' and `low' politics and that it is also dependent on the personalities involved. The article concluded by calling for a closer analysis of the possible negative implications of this tight bilateral working relationship, particularly in light or reunified Germany's growing pre-eminence. Both countries are bound in to this `axis' to such an extent that, at times, they are unable to consider the full array of policy options when faced with this or that EU issue.
