Discussions of colour centres are often phrased in terms of isolated and highly localised defects or dopant sites. Increasing experimental sensitivity suggests long range interactions, large scale “local” distortions, complexes, clustering, nanoparticles etc. are in fact prevalent. Indeed there may never be any region of a material which is free of the influence of imperfections. The annealing of highly disordered materials similarly shows immense variation depending on the scale of the initial disorder. This review considers how the current situation has arisen, and its implications for future discussions.
