In addition to giving a synopsis of the play, some history of its genesis and a brief critical conspectus of its initial reception, this commissioned entry (of about 3,000 words) argues that the life/death dialectic that informs the situation of the characters in "Huis clos" articulates a central moral question in Sartre's thought, concerning freedom, responsibility and "bad faith".
