Reaction of C60Ph5Cl With cyanogen bromide results in replacement of the chlorine by BrCN and ring closure between the addend and an adjacent phenyl ring, giving a 1-bromoisoquinoline derivative of fullerene; this readily undergoes nucleophilic replacement of Br by OH to give the corresponding 1-isoquinolone derivative.
