This paper arises from an empirical study of children's participation in statutory reviews. Emerging critical themes are used to interrogate the nature and direction of law, policy and practice in the rapidly developing field of child advocacy. The analysis has informed advice to government by a leading children's charity and has been commended as worthy of close attention by policy-makers. The paper has methodological impact, giving a critical account of an innovatory, emancipatory research approach. Conference papers presented in Germany and Italy have established the work as a major reference point which substantially advances international understanding of child advocacy policy.
