The article uses the concept of a gender contract to compare the similarities and differences in the German and Japanese employment and welfare systems, which are categorised as socially conservative welfare states. By focusing on female employment it finds that there are a larger number of similarities between these two societies than might initially have been expected, in particular in relation to the use of marginalised part-time work that does not benefit from forms of social protection.
