China’s antitrust investigation into Google highlights the intricate relationship between global trade, technology and national security in an increasingly polarised geopolitical landscape. While greater oversight of multinational corporations is vital for ensuring fair competition, fostering innovation, and driving sustainable economic growth, the politicisation of economic and technological issues, along with tendency of pan-national security conceptualisation, risks distorting markets and undermining genuine competition. Framed within both competition law and geopolitical strategy, the Google investigation marks a pivotal moment for the global tech industry. The focus of the probe revolves around Google’s Android operating system for smartphones, positioning it as a bargaining chip in the broader U.S.-China trade conflict. Its outcomes could create new opportunities for Chinese companies but may also stifle competition, hinder innovation and disrupt market integration.
