This deeply analytical paper on `inscription¿ and its technologies argues against simple reliance on `tacit knowledge¿ or `routines¿ propositions to theorise about the reproducibility of knowledge and understanding. It draws on such diverse sources as the social anthropology of Goody for its complex theoretical basis.
