In opposition to Achebe, I argue that 'Heart of Darkness' (1899) was, by the standards of its times, remarkably anti-racist and anti-imperialist. I show that it has various features in common with Achebe's novel, 'Things Fall Apart'. Conrad and Achebe, I suggest, are 'on the same side'.
