Syncphonia is a software app which works by displaying a score and specially adapted parts with synchronised position indication across wirelessly networked computer tablets. Standard notation can be enhanced through use of colours to improve accessibility. It was devised by researchers at the University of Sussex as part of an investigation into alleviating anxiety and enhancing enjoyment of primary school musicians taking part in ensemble and orchestral performance for the first time. The network synchronisation is performed through bluetooth and XML files, and this aspect of the design distinguishes the software from PDF notation formats. The app is available free to UK schools via the App Store. During the originally funded research period (Sept 2015 to March 2016) with school children aged 9-11, participants reported feeling a better 'sound' due to stress reduction and the ability to read longer and more complex pieces, leading to an enhanced sense of the structure and flow of the music.
