A Grid-Based Extension to an Assistive Multimodal Interface

This paper describes an extension to a multimodal system designed to improve Internet accessibility for the visually impaired. Here we discuss the novel application of a grid (patent pending) to our assistive web interface. Findings from our evaluation have shown that the grid enhances interaction by improving the user.s positional awareness when exploring a web page.

Originality: Presents a new (patented) technique which allows for structured spatial multimodal web browsing for visually impaired people. Rigour: This is a new technique in the area. A review is presented of other uses of grid-based systems, then a comparative evaluation approach with fourteen visually impaired users was used to verify the use in this research context. Significance: This allows sighted and blind web users to share the same mental model, therefore spatial references such as 'top right' or 'bottom left' can be used to communicate the location of an image or hyperlink. This is significant as visually impaired users can more easily ask for assistance over a remote link (telephone or internet). Impact: This research has resulted in a successful patent filing (GB0624035.2). The aim is be to promote this patented technology to existing Assistive Technology vendors.
