This paper gives an overview of the current status of Internet accessibility and offers a brief review of the existing technologies that address accessibility problems faced by visually impaired people. It then describes an adaptive architecture which is able to integrate diverse assistive technologies so as to allow visually impaired people to access various types of graphical web content. This system is also capable of adapting to user’s profile and preferences in order to provide the most adequate interface to the user.

Originality: Presents the first system which can adapt to the needs of visually impaired people when browsing graphics on websites. The adaptive system architecture can adapt according to three main variables; user's preferences, graphical content and hardware devices. Rigour: The system is compared with other adaptive systems, then a novel architecture is presented. Significance: As the proposed architecture is designed to be extensible, it is anticipated that this research will form a framework for others in the in the field to build upon. Impact: This work describes an adaptive system architecture that is used in a large European project in a specialized topic area. As such, the system is being used in key research labs spanning eight countries. This paper was accepted for publication at the International Conference on Disability, Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies (ICDVRAT), and subsequently selected to appear in a special issue of this journal.
