This paper examines a virtual prototyping system for electronic devices which incorporate visualisation using a novel integrated development environment that combines user interaction with photorealistic 2D and 3D models. Full system level hardware simulation is also supported within this framework which offers electronic simulation in a virtual environment. This helps to link product development specialists with a unified and coherent modelling environment. Virtual prototyping is a novel design methodology that aims to decrease the time-to-market and increase product reliability, quality and fulfilment of user requirements. This paper uses the example of a remotely controlled domestic cooking system to illustrate this process.

Originality: Novel virtual prototyping system for mobile electronic devices with particular emphasis on display technology. This is the first system to incorporate full system level hardware simulation with photorealistic 2D and 3D model visualisation in an integrated development environment. This enables high level visual modelling and low-level system simulation to be linked in a comprehensive prototyping environment not previously available to device manufacturers. Rigour: Evaluated thorough use as the development platform for a commercially designed remotely controlled domestic cooking system by Fagor Electrodomsticos, S.Coop. Research completed as part of a European FP5 research grant. Significance: High International significance in the area of virtual prototyping for the rapid development and reuse of electronic IP. This research leads directly to reduced time to market for device manufacturers and increased user evaluation during design and thus device usability and market appeal. This research has been adopted by several international manufacturers such as Fagor Electrodomsticos (leading European domestic goods manufacturer), Celestica (leading European electronic system manufacturer) and ID-MOS (IC design house). Impact: Addresses key issues in management of the development cycle between collaborating manufacturers in the production of system-on-chip devices.
