Notes
Severe thermal loading of the casing in a gas-turbine engine is a problem for all manufacturers. The lack of representative data and understanding has led to component failures during engine development costing of the order ~£2M (toby.kohler@rolls-royce.com). Building on award winning work by the group this paper demonstrates a 30% heat load reduction and insight/explanation of the previously undocumented mechanisms. A further £183k (1yr, Prof. Ainsworth PI, University of Oxford) has since been invested in follow-on research. As well as sponsors Rolls-Royce (neil.harvey@rolls-royce.com), the work has attracted international interest. Selected by conference chair for ASME Journal of Turbomachinery.
