Auto focussing device and method

There is disclosed an apparatus for detecting the distance of a surface from a lens, for example for use in a microscope autofocus arrangement. A light beam is directed into the lens, displaced sideways from the lens axis. The displacement of the reflected beam emerging from the lens is used to determine the required distance or to operate a focussing actuator.
